From somewhere on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, echoes of wild ravens, the condor and the wind, rain, and sun of this extraordinary place are unfolding on my canvas.

Simplifying shapes of rock and sky to create more drama and mystery in the big pools of shadow with their floating islands of rock.

Here I've put down a thin layer of oil over an acrylic underpainting, so I can set the path of the shadow shapes. The big dark shapes are guides for the painting's directional energy and composition.

There is a major path through the painting - do you see it?. It begins on the lower left. This shadow path follows the bed of the Colorado River (whose waters we cannot see but we know are there). The shape begins a strong winding diagonal that pushes up from the bottom, drawing the eye 'back' in space.
So far, so good.
